Hedge andshrub pruning
Hedges squared up, shrubs shaped and small trees thinned, each at the right time of year for the plant.
What we prune
Cutting the wrong wood at the wrong time costs a year of flowers or leaves a hedge bare at the bottom. We plan each cut around the plant.
Hedges
Cedar, laurel and privet cut to a straight face and flat top, with the base kept wider than the top so the bottom stays green.
Shrubs
Shaped by thinning, not only shearing, so they keep a natural outline and still flower.

Small trees
Crossing branches, suckers and deadwood taken out of ornamental and fruit trees to open up the canopy.
Prunings hauled away
Every branch and clipping loaded and removed the same day. Nothing left stacked by the fence.
When we prune what
Timing matters more for pruning than for any other yard job.
Late winter
Dormant pruning of deciduous shrubs and small trees, while the branch structure is easy to see.
Spring
Spring-flowering shrubs such as lilac and forsythia shaped right after they finish blooming.
Summer
Hedge trimming, with a first cut in June and a second in late August.
Fall
Light tidy-up cuts only. Heavy pruning waits until the plants are dormant.
When is the best time to trim a cedar hedge?
Late spring, and again in late summer if you want it crisp. Avoid cutting back into brown wood with no green on it, because cedar will not grow back from there.
Do you remove whole trees?
We prune and thin trees. Full removals, especially near the house or power lines, go to a specialist crew with the right equipment, and we'll tell you who to call.
My hedge is badly overgrown. Can it be saved?
Often, yes, by bringing it back in stages over two or three seasons instead of one hard cut. We'll look at it and tell you honestly at the estimate.
